Solved Microsoft outlook 2010 wont open

Specs: Windows XP
my outlook will not open, it gives this error when i try to open it: "cannot start microsoft outlook. cannot open the outlook window. the set of folders cannot be opened. C:\Users\username\Appdata\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst is not an Outlook data file (.pst)"

i tried to run scanpst i get the erroe:"The microsoft outlook inbox repair tool does not recognize the file C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst. No information can be recovered.

the datafile at the above location shows that its 0kb.

Then you've lost all your Outlook data, and that is precisely why you should always keep a backup of the PST file on another drive - and it's so easy to back it up as well.
Easier than any other email client I know of.

You will have to uninstall Outlook, then delete the 'Outlook' sub-folder which contains the zero bytes PST file.

Now reinstall Outlook and start over with no messages and no contacts if you didn't back them up.

That's learning your lesson the hard way. I've been there myself.

i was afraid of that. i do have a backup, although not entirely recent, that was created while running scanpst some time back. gues its better than nothing. thank you

You don't have to reinstall Outlook. Just go into the Mail settings in Control Panel and change the Primary data file to the backup that you have. Browse to whatever location you place the file.. You can then delete the reference to the other one if you wish.

Sometimes when level of corruption of pst file is so high that inbox repair tool is not able to detect and repair the pst file, In such situations some third party tools like Kernel for Outlook PST Repair might do the tricks. Try to repair corrupt pst file with the help of this tool it will surely repair the file and extract data from it.
