Merging text in two cells

August 26, 2011 at 03:41:26
Specs: Windows 7
I have two columns of text, one I have two columns of text, one with first names and one with family names. I want the text in the former to move into the latter, in front of the family names. Of course I could cut and paste each individual first name to where I want them but this is incredibly time consuming as we are dealing with thousands. Is there a quicker way to do this?

i assume you are using Excel?

There are two methods you can use a formula such as

Assumptions: column A = Forename
column B = Family names

formula in C1:
=A1 & " " & A2

This will concatenate the two cells with a space in between

or you could right a macro that will do it for you. A bit of a longer process but i would prefer the macro.

After you use the formula you can then select those cells and do:

Copy...PasteSpecial...Values to eliminate the formulas and lock in the names.
