loss of all my e-mails from my btinternet acc

Specs: Windows XP
I apparently have lost all my e-mails from my btinternet account. My previous laptop died and I bought a new one. I installed outlook and then confirgured it to receive e-mails from my yahoo/btinternet account. When I called BT they said there is an advanced option in MSoutlook that if not pressed would delete all mails in the BT server and hold them locally (not at all obvious)! As my old pc has died I cannot get the old e-mails. I still can't believe that yahoo/btinternet would not keep archives of my e-mail and would allow all my emails over a number of years to be deleted and non-retrievable. Is there anything I can do?

Sorry, but unless you can recover your emails from the old drive I expect they are lost.
If old emails are important you must maintain your own backups of them. Hard drives fail and data can be lost for a variety of other reasons as well. You must be prepared when (not if) this happens. This is your responsibility, not your email provider's.

If your email provider maintained long term storage of email for everyone it would multiply storage requirements. This would raise costs which would have to be passed on to subscribers. And all for a service that few subscribers would want.
