I am looking for a formula that states. If A4=Data, then G4=$amt. I have read variations of this Q&A but I have not found a solution yet. thanks for any help

Your question is not clear. Are

Dataand$amttext strings? If so, enter this in G4:=IF(A1="Data", "$amt", "")

G4 will display the text string

$amtis A1 contains the wordData, otherwise it will be blank. If

Dataand$amtrepresent something else, you'll need to explain that to us.

The "data" in cell A4 is letter and numbers (NV15). When that is plugged into cell A4 I would like for a specific cell (such as G4) to have a value such as $1.00. Does that explain it a little better? Thanks again for your help.

No, your question is still not clear. Since we have no idea about what you are trying to accomplish you have to be very specific.

Are you looking for a specific value to be placed into G4 based on what is in A1, i.e. you have a list of values that will be entered into A1 and you need a corresponding dollar amount to appear in G4?

Is it always G4 in which the dollar value should appear?

How many "matching sets" of Datas/$amts do you have?

I apoligize for not getting back with you sooner. Yes, I think you are understanding what I am asking for. A1 will have a drop down list and when a specific item fro example NV15 is selected, a corresponding amount will appear in G4. The amount will always appear in G4. I will have 4 items in the list for A1 and a corresponding amount will appear in G4 for each item.

With 4 "pairs", you could use a Nested IF in G4: =IF(A4="NV15", 1, IF(A4="XY27", 2, IF(A4= etc.

Format G4 as currency and the results will display as dollar values.

However, a more elegant solution would be to use VLOOKUP. Look it up in the Excel Help files.

Create a table of your pairs in e.g. B1:C4 and use something like:

=VLOOKUP(A4, $B$1:$C$4, 2, 0)

By using VLOOKUP you could simply change the table if your data or dollar values change and not have to edit the formula.

Thank's so much for your help. I will try the Vlookup.
