Solved How to import Outlook Express Messages from my old computer

Specs: Windows 10
Is there a way to bring email messages from my old computer (Win XP, Outlook Express) into my new computer ( Win 10, Microsoft Outlook)?.
I copied all Outlook Express Mail folders from the old computer into the new one but MS Outlook isn't able to import them.
I've seen instructions to upgrade from Outlook Express to Outlook if both apps are installed on the same computer, but my new computer doesn't have Outlook Express. ..... so is there some other way of bringing my (6000+) messages into the new computer?

Is there some free application (thunderbird??) that might assist in this task?

PROBLEM SOLVED: After considering and trying various suggestions, I solved the problem by:
1. Installing MS Outlook onto the old computer that had Outlook Express and it was able to import the Contacts and Messages from Outlook Express. (It created a file: Outlook.pst in my documents folder)

2. I copied the Outlook.pst file from the old computer onto a USB stick and then plugged the USB stick into the new computer.

3. I opened Outlook 2010 on the new computer and imported the Contacts and Emails from the .pst file on the USB stick. (File/Ope/Import/Import from another program or File/Outlook Data File (.pst)) etc. It then ticks away, importing all email folders and contacts.
NB: I noted that the emails appeared in the various folders immediately after importation but the Contacts list was blank (panic!). However after closing Outlook and re-opening it, the contacts list appeared as expected. All is now well.
