Solved How to change words in Uppercase to lower case

June 15, 2016 at 08:17:27
Specs: Windows 7
Hi I changed all lower case of "city" to Uppercase "CITY" USING Find and Replace. But when I tried to change the same "CITY" to "city" it didn't work. However I did get the message we have made 12 replacements but not even one "CITY" was changed to "city." When I tried to replace "CITY" with another word in lowercase, it replaced the different word but in Uppercase. Please help this novice in word. Thank you.

Hello Mike, thanks for your reply. No I am not using Excel but Ms Word 2016. I think I found the solution to my problem. Find and Replace is case sensitive. Therefore to change Uppercase words to lowercase one has to go to "more" option and check the box "Match Case." I did that and I was able to change all "CITY" to "city" using Find and Replace.
I hope this may be helpful to someone. If anyone has other solutions to this problem please do post it.

What version of Excel are you using?

However I did get the message we have made 12 replacements but not even one "CITY" was changed to "city."

What words were changed?

When I tried to replace "CITY" with another word in lowercase, it replaced the different word but in Uppercase.

Again, what words were changed?

Also, using Find & Replace, can be a bit tricky as it will replace all instances of city even if they are part of a longer word, like cityscape or ethnicity or publicity.

Additionally, Find & Replace is case insensitive, so if your word is CITY
and you want to replace it with town < lower case > then simply doing a Find & Replace with the word city in lower case will also replace city found in Upper Case.

OOPS, missed that. My Bad......

But, I believe that WORD is also case insensitive, and works pretty much the same way as Excel.

But, I will check just to make sure.

There seems to be an added wrinkle with WORD,
as the replaced word,
seems to retain the case of the word it replaces.

So if your looking for CITY < upper case >
and replace it with town < lower case >
The replacement word, town < lower case>
will inherit the case of the word it is replacing,
so the lower case town, is converted to upper case TOWN.

Ah, the good ole <MORE> option that I always forget about.

I wish there was a way to always display that option as I always forget it's there.
Same applies to Excel which also has a similar option.
