I need to take the 1st and 3rd number in a string and add them together. 6262 --> 6+6=12

624664 --> 6+4 = 10

4533 --> 4+3 = 7if there a function in excel that can do this?

Technically, the RIGHT, LEFT and MID functions in Excel are Text functions. You should read up on them in the Excel Help files. However, since Excel likes to play with numbers more than with text, if it can perform a mathematical operation on a number that was returned by a Text function, it will.

With 6262 in A1, try this:

=SUM(LEFT(A1,1),MID(A1,3,1))
