Well, you could download Evernote from the app store or you can download a whole office suite. It is called Libre Office and it will work on a Mac. I use it in Suse. You can save documents as docx, xlsx, pptx, and so on.

Openoffice.org is also a free download and is a complete office suite and you can get the Mac version.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

The latest version of Open Office 4.1.1 won't open older word documents created with MS word. Microsoft claims a copyright infringement and forbids them to use the process necessary to use files like.wpd etc. It's a good program to create new documents though. I believe you can also save them as a PDF. Libre still opens all file types.

.wpd are Wordpad
.doc and .docx are Word formats. I have not had any problem opening or saving in Word, or Excel formats on the machines that have Openoffice on them.
Note that MS sells a version of Office for Mac for those who want the real thing and are willing to pay for it.
