Solved Formula to check entry for duplicates in same column

May 31, 2016 at 04:33:12
Specs: Windows 7
I have this Excel sheet with just one column (A) in which I input just numbers in each row. I would like to create a formula so that each number, before being inserted, is checked for duplicates against the same column. If it is not duplicate, it is inserted accordingly, and if it is a duplicate, some error pops up.

I've tried something with the vlookup function, but didn't succeed. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I can think of 2 options.

1 - Data Validation as described here:

http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/mi...

2 - A macro that presents an InputBox and then checks for duplicates. If you are interested in a macro, let me know. However, I'll need to know what you mean by "If it is not duplicate, it is inserted accordingly..." Inserted where?

Hello,

As for point 2, I was referring the entry being inserted in the same cell where the user input it.

However, I think the first point would suffice. The thing is that I wrongly told you that it's to be done in Excel, but instead it has to be done in Google Sheets, which although very similar, differ a bit, and I can't find certain things referred to in the article.

I don't use Google docs, but this video indicates that Google Docs has the ability to "Reject Input" via Data Validation using the COUNTIF function:

Hello,

Many thanks for the video, it is what I was looking for.

Now I just need to trim it out to ignore blanks.

Thanks again.
