You formatted your hard drive,
then recovered an .xlsx file off the drive after the format?

You can try an Open & Repair:

On the File tab, click Open.
In the Open dialog box, select the corrupted workbook that you want to open
Click the arrow next to the Open button, and then click Open and Repair.
Click Repair

See if that works.

Since you formatted have you installed a program such as MS Office (or equivalent) that is capable of reading xlsx files? If not then that is the reason it is invalid and you shouldn't monkey around with the file in case it messes it up.

xlsx is a compressed Excel file. Changing it to anything else will not help. You could check the file out by using an online viewer such as this:

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Try this and see what you get.

The .xlsx file type is an compressed archive type file, IE it's a ZIP type file
Try to open the file with something like 7-zip, which is an open source archive program. You can also use Zip.

If you are able to open the archive, there should be several files and directorys
like:

docProps
xl
_rels
[Content_Types].xml

You may or may not have these exact files/directory's but it should be similar.

If you are able to open the archive, and you have the xl directory,
within the xl directory should be another directory called Worksheets.

Open the Worksheets directory and you should have a list of sheets. IE Sheet1, Sheet2, etc.

Your data is in these sheets, unfortunately they are in a flat file format with HTML codes interspersed between the data.

If you can't open the archive or you do not have the proper directory structure I'm afraid you have lost your file.

Sorry your reply is unclear.

Using 7-Zip or Zip, can you open the .xlsx file?

If "Yes", what is the structure you see?

If, when you open the .xlsx with 7Zip, there is no file structure within the .xlsx,
then you have lost your data.
Sorry.
