Solved Excel - identifying area code data for given numbers

July 2, 2012 at 03:45:14
Specs: Windows Vista
Hello,

In my excel file, I have 2 sheets, one is a static info sheet which contains international calling codes and the corresponding country names in columns A & B respectively. Total number of rows I have are about 250. In another sheet I have a list of calls made to my company from different parts of the world every month in row A. These calls come from all countries and change every month, usually ranging from 3000-5000 calls. All I wish to do is from the calls that have come I have to place the country name next to the call in sheet B. Eg: In Sheet 1 I have 0044-UK, 0061-Australia, 0092-Pakistan, 0064-NewZealand and in Sheet 2 - Numbers - 0044487834733,00642983923,006198300443,0092847006134 etc.

Can anyone help how to proceed with this.

Thanks
MN

A is a Column, not a Row.

re: "I have to place the country name next to the call in sheet B"

I assume you mean Column B, not Sheet B.

A posting tip:

Please click on the blue line at the end of this post and read the instructions on how to post example data in this forum. using that format, I assume you have a list like this:

Sheet 1:

       A B
1 0044 UK
2 0061 Australia
3 0092 Pakistan
4 0064 NewZealand

Sheet 2:
        A
1 004448783473
2 00642983923
3 006198300443
4 0092847006134

If that's the case, then put this in Sheet2!B1 and drag it down:

=VLOOKUP(LEFT(A1,4),Sheet1!$A$1:$B$4,2,0)

Obviously you'll need to modify the formula to fit your exact ranges.
