Excel Formula To Look Up Data

Specs: Windows 7
I have 2 excel spreadsheets. On sheet 1 it contains data with our ref numbers associated with the client numbers. Is there a way that I can type in our ref number and have it automatically fill in the client ref associated with that ref number?

The answer to your question depends on the layout of your data. Excel has various "lookup" functions such a VLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH, etc. Each has its merits and its drawbacks.
