Excel file won't open

A co-worker creates excel files with photos embedded. I copy the files to my computer via a thumb drive. I usually never have any problem opening these files, but one or two of the hundreds of files will not open. I get a message that says " this file is not in a recognizable format". This file was created by the same machine that creates excel files that open with no problem.

Have you tried copying the faulty files a second time, to see if there was a file corruption during copy.

Also if you copy the faulty files back to the original PC (with a new filename), will they open. If not do the original copies of these files still open on the original PC.

I copied the file that won't open to the portable drive. Before it would copy it did a file conversion of some kind. I then re-copied it to my hard drive with a different name and it now opens. Does this mean it was corrupted or the person that saved the file when created saved it with a wrong extention?
In any event thank you for your help.
