Excel 2007 opens, but the file doesn't

October 27, 2010 at 03:06:36
Specs: Windows 7
All of a sudden, double-clicking an Excel 2007 document would open Excel, but not the file. It did not matter if the file was local or remote, if I accessed it via Explorer or not, or if another program (mail client, for instance) tried to call the file open command. Either way, I would be greeted with an empty Excel workbook. If I then chose File, Open, and browsed to my document it would then open it. Very frustrating, but I lived with it . . . until today . . .

First thing to try is a Diagnostic:

Running Microsoft Office Diagnostics from within Excel/Word

Click the Microsoft Office button
Click on the Excel/Word Options button to bring up the Excel Options dialog box (at the bottom of window)
Click on the Resources button in the left hand pane
Click on the Diagnose button in the right hand pane
Click Continue
Click Run Diagnostics

Running Microsoft Office Diagnostics from the Start Menu

Click on the Start button
Click All Programs
Click Microsoft Office folder
Click Microsoft Office Tools
Click Microsoft Office Diagnostics
Click Continue
Click Run Diagnostics

See if that helps.
