Every separate cell clicked on stays selected

November 29, 2011 at 18:36:18
Specs: Windows XP
In excel, every individual cell I click on is selected and stays highlighted. I don't know if I've clicked a key without knowing, but how do I fix this?

No, it happens in the middle of the day.. It might just be that I'm getting used to my new keyboard but I think I may be pushing a key/combination of keys to make it happen..

Best I can come up with is the shortcut key:

CTRL * <-- that is the Star (Multiplication) key, on number pad side of keyboard.

Which selects the current region around the active cell.
or
In a PivotTable, it selects the entire PivotTable report.

What version of Excel do you have?
If 2007 - 2010 try running a Diagnostic.

Running Microsoft Office Diagnostics from within Excel/Word

Click the Microsoft Office button
Click on the Excel/Word Options button to bring up the Excel Options dialog box (at the bottom of window)
Click on the Resources button in the left hand pane
Click on the Diagnose button in the right hand pane
Click Continue
Click Run Diagnostics

Running Microsoft Office Diagnostics from the Start Menu

Click on the Start button
Click All Programs
Click Microsoft Office folder
Click Microsoft Office Tools
Click Microsoft Office Diagnostics
Click Continue
Click Run Diagnostics

Hi Mike,
Thank you for the detailed explanation. I'm going to keep it to refer to the next time it happens again.
