Double Click won't open a Word .doc office2k3

Microsoft Word 2003 win32(full prod)
October 6, 2010 at 14:46:28
Specs: Windows XP, N/A
When I double click on a word document it opens word, but no document

If I open word first, then go file open and point to the document its all good.

I have tried right clicking on a .doc, selecting open with, selecting word and ticking the always open with this program box no good.

I have uninstalled Office 2003 (SP3), rebooted, re-installed and the issue still exists

I am assuming there is some setting in the registry I need to delete/edit

I went to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and deleted the .doc rebooted and reassociated .doc files to word, no good

anyone else experienced this?

Have you checked the file type association?

Click Start
Control Panel
Folder Options
File Types
Scoll down an see what is associated with .doc files.

Yep. was already accociated with Word.

hence why it opens Word - just no document.

I also just tried

winword.exe /r

which is supposed to re-register file type associations, and didn't work neither.

I tried disabling any anti-virus/other programs no difference.

apart from a complete windows reinstall I'm running out of ideas.

I also exported the file type associations from a working pc (just .doc and Word.Document.8 or whatever) still no good.

there must be something else affecting it.

Have you tried replacing your file?

Close Word and do a search of your computer for file and delete it.

If there is more than one, rename or delete ALL of them.

When you launch Word, it will look for and since it cannot find it, it will recreate a new clean one.

Be aware that the file is a hidden system file and may not show up when you do a search for it.
If you are unable to find it,
Go to My Computer
Click the Tools menu
Choose Folder Options.
Click on the View Tab
Put a check where it says, "Show hidden files and folders"
and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"
and "Hide protected operating system files".

If you still cannot find it, look here:
C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

Also, you might want to try a Detect & Repair.

On the Task Bar,
Detect & Repair

See if that helps.

Ok not sure If Anyone still reads these But I found my own Fix

the Issue at hand was when we double click on a WORD file it opens up word but not the file itself - you would have to go up to file open and then find the file and open it in word -

I had this same issue with Excel with a user a while back - my fix for this Both times was to log out of the users profile and log onto another one on the target machine. I then would open the problematic program and create a new file and save it as you normally would. Now go to where you saved the file and double click it it will now work correctly and open. Then log back on the user profile having the issues and you should NOW be able to double click a file and it will open just fine - Let me know if this worked for you
