dell 720 printer will not print envelopes

Dell / 720 photo printer
September 13, 2010 at 18:03:18
Specs: Windows XP
Prints everything else just fine. Had same problem several years ago. Had virus recently and had to do a complete reinstall so problem came back. Can't remember how it was fixed last time. 80 year old novice!
Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi!

"Will not print envelopes" could mean a number of things.

Perhaps it would help if you told us exactly what happens when you try to print envelopes.

printer accepts envelope and makes noise like it is printing but envelope comes out blank. I have gone through set up, checked all settings, removed printer and reloaded it with the CD, removed the program and reloaded it without the CD, still won't print the envelope. It prints letters and documents just fine with no problem. Very frustrating!

Judging from afar, it sounds as if it is printing off of the envelope. It knows the envelope is in the printer, but it thinks it is lined up where it isn't.

Try inserting a regular sheet of paper and printing as if its an envelope. If it prints on the opposite side of the printer from where the envelope normally is, you'll know that that's the problem.

Printer Setup or a margin adjustment should fix that.

Already tried that several times. It just doesn't print anything though it is clicking like it should be printing?

Hi,

Re: reloaded it without the CD

Look at this thread on fixya.com

Are you sure you completely removed the printer and printer drivers/programs before re-connecting the printer without using the CD.

Regards

Yes I completely removed the printer and printer drivers/programs before re-connecting. Now I'm thinking the problem may be with the Microsoft Works program rather than the printer itself?

Hi,

As a temporary fix, you could setup a page of the same size as an envelope.

I don't know Works, so I don't know what options are available for changing the text orientation, or page setups.

PROBLEM SOLVED: when I placed check mark in "print color images in black and white" within works word processor the envelope was printed just as it should.
Why this is necessary is a total mystery, but it works! so as the saying goes,"If it ain't broke don't fix it.
Thanks to all for your help and concern,
Paul
