Microsoft Microsoft excel 2007 (pc)
September 15, 2010 at 07:47:53
Specs: Windows XP
In Excel 2007 if I enter the date September 15, 2010 and format it to text I get 40436. What does the 40436 represent?

The number of days since 1/1/1900, apparently.

Change the formatting on the cell to one of the date formats.

re: The number of days since 1/1/1900

Almost! 40436 is 9/15/2010 which is actually 40435 days since 1/1/1900, which is Day 1.

Excel store dates and times as numbers. The integer portion of the number is the Date, the decimal portion is the Time.

That's why you can do math on dates and time:

3/4/2010 + 1 = 3/5/2010

3/4/2010 + 30 = 4/3/2010

3/4/2010 7:00 AM + 1.4 = 3/5/2010 4:36 PM
