Specs: Windows XP
I have come across some forums with similar problems but no one seems to have an answer that works for me.
I have office 2003 installed on my computer and i am having a major problem with word and excel files appearing as corrupt or asking me to choose a file conversion type.

Initally i thought it was a problem with the version then i install office 2007 but the same thing happened when i tried to open it . Note that the files have been saved as 97-2003 compatable.

It also happend my friend with excel files when she saved them to an external harddrive and tried to open them on another machine. Both her laptop and the other machine have ofice 2007 installed.

I have tried to open the files with the open and repair function but the file still appears as random characters when opened.

Please Help as i cannot access alot of important files because of this

First thing to try is a Diagnostic:

Running Microsoft Office Diagnostics from within Excel / Word

Click the Microsoft Office button
Click on the Excel / Word Options button to bring up the Excel / Word Options dialog box (at the bottom of window)
Click on the Resources button in the left hand pane
Click on the Diagnose button in the right hand pane
Click Continue
Click Run Diagnostics

Running Microsoft Office Diagnostics from the Start Menu

Click on the Start button
Click All Programs
Click Microsoft Office folder
Click Microsoft Office Tools
Click Microsoft Office Diagnostics
Click Continue
Click Run Diagnostics

See if that helps.

You could also try saving the offending file as SYLK or HTTP type files, not DOC or DOCX file types.

You can also open the file with a text editor like JEDIT or NOTEPAD,
scroll down, the top will be filled up with Word instructions that look like garbage,
until you find the body of the document then Cut & Paste into a new document.
