cannot see non-adjacecent cells selected

Microsoft Excel 2007 home and student

Specs: Windows XP
I have a graphics card that has 32-bit as the Highest. When I use Ctrl and click, or typed in the Name Box to select non-adjacent cells, it happens, I just cannot SEE them. Haven't been able to find this in any forums or in Office Online. Thank you!

If you don't see the cells, what do you see?

Sorry, I should have said that I cannot see the grey color that is supposed to show in their background when selected. The data shows.
My instructor helped me at school and their computers have a grey background when cells are selected. I thought I was just doing the whole thing wrong until that!
Not seeing the color makes it hard to know that the right items have been selected.
Going with putting cell ranges in the Name Box; that is most accurate for me with this issue.
Thank you!

Does this happen in all workbooks or just one in particular?

I'll admit it sounds strange.
