Cannot add additional items in drop down

May 6, 2011 at 07:58:58
Specs: Windows 7 Prof
As I add items to my list I come to an end and it will not allow me to continue adding more. How can I add additional items to the list as they will all go into drop menu?

Are you using AutoFilter? If yes, then there is a 1000 entry limit.

How are you adding items to your list?

Since there are multiple ways to do that, it would help if we knew which method you are trying.

It only allows me to add roughly 250 characters, not 1000.

If I recall correctly, there is something like a 256 character limit when using that method.

Instead of entering the data directly into the Source field, enter the individual list items in a "column" and then refer to that range in the Source field. e.g. =$A$1:$A$75

Not only will you be able add significantly more items to your list, it will also be much easier to edit the list since all you have to do is edit the cells, not a long cumbersome text string.

If you like that method, check out this site for a very useful technique related to Data Validation drop downs known as Dependent Drop Down Lists.
