Specs: Windows XP

I have made a drop down list in my document at page 2. When I choose a report title from the dropdown list it automatically appear at my front page (in my header&footer at the frontpage). But the problem is 2 signs that show up in front of and back of my report title like this:

< Report title >

How can I get rid of these signs??? Even though I delete them, they automatically show up when I double click to get out of the header and footer.

Please help!! :) Thanks

It would help if you said what you actually did.

What have you used to get the data from your list into the header/footer. Have you inserted a field, if so what is it, or did you do this with some Visual Basic (a macro).

If you used a field, please post the field (Toggle Field Codes first - to display the detail).

If you used a Visual Basic macro, please post the code.

Please remember that no one using this site can see what you have done, or how your document is organized.

I have not used a macro. I just inserted a field.

The field code is this:

{STYLEREF "01 Report Title" \* MERGEFORMAT}

I found out that when I now just click edit field on one of the other lines in the footer and the click OK again, the same sign (<TEXT...) pop up before the text.

I was able to recreate your issue in Word 2007 when using the list box from the new 'content controls'

The reason it happens is that your Style "01 Report Title" has been applied to the wrong part of the control.

I assume that you are using a 'content controls' list box.

In design mode your list box has three sections, one has a left arrow and the list ID name, one has the list of names and one has the list ID again and a right arrow.
You need to select the two outer sections in turn and format them as 'normal' text, and have only the middle section formatted as "01 Report Title".
You can't select the outer parts by double-clicking, but dragging the cursor across with the mouse works.

Once the outer parts are formatted as normal text, your field will not pick up the < and > which appear to come from the two outer parts of the control.

Let me know if this works.

I don't really get this. There is a left arrow and the list ID name, then there is the name I chose from the drop down list, and then the list ID name again with a right arrow. Thing is, all the other dropdown list have this too, but on the front page they don't show these < > signs. It is correct that I can't double-click on the outer items, but I don't understand what you mean by formatting them as normal text. You mean erase them and then write them in as normal text? This doesn't work.

I may think that the problem is on the front page. If I double-click on the header&footer and get into the header&footer tools, I then mark one of the lines that does't have the < > sign, and then right click and edit field and then I click Ok at once without doing anything else, these lines also get a < sign. Very strange. They only get a single < sign and not the < text > signs.

Is this a bug or is it just me that can't see what the problem is? I have only used word2007 for a week so don't have any particular skills with it.

The way that STYLEREF works is that it shows text that has been formatted with the named style.

From what I understood, and please correct me if I am wrong, where you have {STYLEREF "01 Report Title" \* MERGEFORMAT} it shows the < and > signs as well as the required text.

The required text comes from a drop-down list.
The drop-down list, when viewed in design mode has three parts, the middle of which is the list that users either select from.

For the {STYLEREF "01 Report Title" \* MERGEFORMAT} to display the selected list item it does this by copying anything that is formatted with a text style named "01 Report Title"

I am assuming that your drop down is formatted with this style.

When I tried this I found that < and > showed up as well as the selected item from the list.

The reason appears to be that not only was the list formatted with this style, but the other two parts of the drop-down control were also formatted with this style, and resulted in the < and > appearing.

I was able to remove the < and > characters by ensuring that the two outer parts of the drop-down were formatted with a different style.

Select one of the outer parts and then apply the 'Normal' style to it. You cannot delete these parts of the drop-down, but like any text you can apply a style. So select them in turn and while selected apply a style to them - anything will do, just as long as it's not the "01 Report Title" style.

When I apply a style to the outer parts the whole thing changes style. And then it just says ! the field on the frontpage.

But I found another way to fix the problem. Just simply mark the < > signs, right click and choose Font and mark the Hidden button. Then they disappeared.

Thanks anyway Humar. I really appreciate your help :)
