assign number to text values listed multiple

Specs: Windows XP
Hi there! I track students as they take practice tests in our program. Each student will be listed at least 5 times since there are 5 subtests and the student might take each subtest several times. I am trying to assign each student a number without having to type the number over and over for 400 students... Is there a formula that can compare c2 with c1 and if different assign number +1? If the same just repeat the number in the box above it?

1 Suzy Q
1 Suzy Q
1 Suzy Q
1 Suzy Q
2 Jon A
2 Jon A
2 Jon A
3 next student
3 next student
3 next student

With your names in Column A, starting at cell 1
In cell B1 enter the number 1
In cell B2 enter the formula: =IF(A2=A1,B1,B1+1)
Drag down as many rows as necessary.
