February 17, 2011 at 01:34:18
Specs: Windows 7
I am using Exel 2010 Professional on a Windows 7 notebook. When I key in any value with more than 15 numbers, ther 16th number onwards gets converted to zero, e.g I Key in 12345678901234567890, after I hit enter, it changes the value to 12345678901234500000. The16th value onwards will get changed to Zero, and no matter what numeric format I use it is like this. Help!! Thanks

Excel uses floating point registers that only accommodate 15-digit precision.

What are you trying to do with these numbers?

Thanks for the reply, so if I understand you correctly, anything more than 15 digits, Excel is just not able to handle it?? As for my needs, am storing some serial number info, and what I have is hitting 18 digits. Apart from storing it as a text value, is there any way for it to remain as a numeric value?

If it's a serial number (e.g. of a machine, etc?) why do you need it to be a number?

What are you doing with the "number" that it needs to be a number?

Hi,

I am using a spreadsheet as a database, and one of the fields is serial number, and the serial numbers of some of the products are a 16 digit number, (not something I want, but it is such). If Excel changes the data, means my database has a data integrity issue.

Earlier you said: "Apart from storing it as a text value, is there any way for it to remain as a numeric value?"

I asked "Why do you need it to be number"?

In other words, why not store it as text?
