Solved Access and open old documents

October 16, 2012 at 12:58:58
Specs: Windows 7
I can not open files I saved to a disc in 2007, the files are dated 1999, they are saved as DOC files but may be word perfect files, I don't really remember. When I try to open with openoffice I get a box asking to set the ASCII filter options and I tried using different options but when file opens it is just gobblyguk...for lack of a better word.

"they are saved as DOC files but may be word perfect files, I don't really remember"

Not very helpful to us. Can't you tell from the filename extension? WordPerfect files are usually .wpd or .wpx (where x is the version number), whereas Word files are either .doc or .docx

Word 2007 can only open WordPerfect 5 or WordPerfect 6 documents, so that could be your problem. If they were Word files they would open easily in Word 2007.
You need to find your old WordPerfect installation disc & install it.

Thank you, Phil22, they are .doc files. The word reader I downloaded yesterday opened some of the files, but the older ones remained garbled. I remember using Wordperfect long before I started using word, but I have no idea what version of WP I had.

Thank you again. I will try to install the discs, but if I remember correctly they are floppy discs which poses another challenge.

Thank you Mike, I opened the link to the Google search and found Zamzar free online file conversion. I have uploaded one of the files to see how it works. If is does I will use the site to convert the other files.

Thank you again.

Yeah Baby! It worked. My file is now a readable docx file. I am so excited. Thank you!!
