December 13, 2012 at 16:29:24
Specs: Windows 7
My samsung galaxy phone with android os connects to the weak signal of the far away router in stead of connecting til to range extender close by.
Signal from extender is strong but the phone seems to have problems in obtaining the IP addres from the extender.
Have returned to factory settings and made new setup - but still the same problem, and only with connecting tilthe Xyzel range extender 2205

No problem, I'm happy to help.

I would recommend calling the manufacturer of your phone and talk to their support people about this. It could be a known issue for which there is a fix. Since other devices connect to the extender ok, I'm inclined to think the issue is your phone or it's operating system that's at issue here.

Have you tried connecting any other wireless devices to that extender?

Thanks for your answer

My wife also has a samsung galaxy gio, and it connects wireless with no problems. We are both using Android OS but of sligthly different versions

I don't understand why my phone always connects to the access point (AP), with the weakest signal, and not to the extender(EXT), which has an excellent signal.

When the phone tries to establish a wireless connection by fetching an IP-address, it always picks up the IP-adddres of the AP with a signal strength of -75 dB and not the IP-address of the EXT with a signal strenth of -50 dB

I don's know if I can force it to connect to the EXT

Just to confirm, it's connecting to the extender, correct?

It's unusual behavior for a wireless device to connect to a device with a weaker signal rather than the stronger. I'm not at all familiar with your device but if this were a laptop, I'd be able to force it to connect to whatever device I desired. Check your phone and see if you can't force it to connect. If you can, try and force it to connect to the extender.

Baring that, the only advice I can give you is to check with the manufacturer's support people. Perhaps there's a "feature" of the phone that needs to be tweaked, or a setting changed, in order to allow it to connect to the other wireless device.

Yes, her phone connects without problems to the extender !

I just discovered, that if I use the phone in a point in the far end of the house where the signal from the AP is very weak, the phone tries to connect to the extender. A few times it works to set up a connection, but shortly after it disconnects again, even where the extender signal is "very good"

Unfortunately I can nor force a connection from the Android phone, and have not been able to find an app to the phone for this purpose.

Thanks for yuor help anyway
