Wireless suddenly presents problems

Specs: Vista SP1, 3.0Ghz,2Ghz
I have a Trendnet TEW-639GR wireless router. Initially I set it up to not broadcast and everything was fine. But then my laptop started having trouble finding the wireless network. So I enabled broadcast to make things easier. Now, my connection is not stable and it keeps dropping every so many minutes. I have XP SP3 on the laptop. I don't think the issue is WZC because I disabled that in one session and the connection still dropped. I checked my neighborhood wireless channels and there isn't anybody in the vicinity using the same channel. Could it be that a component in either the router or laptop in going bad? I don't think I need a firmware upgrade either because the laptop is using 802.11 b/g. The only thing different is that I installed SP3 on the laptop back in April 2010. Don't understand why all of a sudden the wireless is giving me headaches.

To say the truth Trendnet never was among especially well engineered brands for routers. I would borrow any other router just to check that the old one isn't failing...
If not try to get high gain wireless antenna, if the router is OK it may do wonders to your signal.

Bur really, just get better router and flash it Tomato

My router has a wireless on/off switch which I keep turning on and off depending if I'm wired to it or using the wireless. I do this because when I'm wired to it I am right on top of it and they say you should be at least 3 feet away from the radio waves. Do you think constantly using the on/off switch is causing it to become worn out?
