you would connect the trendnet via a lan port not a wan port. You may need a crossover cable from its lan port to the netgear lan port.

ok thats how i have it connected through the lan port. Basically how we have it setup now is we have 2 offices in our building. The internet is to one office, we have a patch cable in the server room linking the 2, the second office is where the netgear router is and the trendnet is hooked to it via the lan ports. The wan port on the netgear links everything to our NAS in the other office. The only problem is that there is no internet anymore. i have full access to the nas and our wireless printer that is in the first office so i know that part is working. so would just using a patch cable instead of a regular cat5 cable fix the lack of internet?

patch cable = straight thru cable
crossover cable = has some wires reversed.

If you can't access the trendnet router [you should have assigned it a static ip for maintenance/access reasons] then yes you have the wrong cable hookup.

But it needs to be a crossover not a patch.
