When your laptop is connected to wireless network, sometimes it won't be able to connect to Internet due to incorrect IP settings on laptop. You should type following command in command prompt (cmd.exe) to make sure it displays correct IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS servers settings.

ipconfig /all

This is typical way to configure wireless adapter in XP article, you might have a look and see whether it could help you.

Hope this helps.

If you have a wireless router then you don't need internet connection sharing. The router does that for you.

When you say your wireless laptop can connect when you are at home but not when you are away, what exactly do you mean? What kind of connections are you wanting to access away from home? Wireless internet at a friend's home? Free wireless hotspots? What error messages do you get?
