Can other devices see the WiFi? If not, try checking your router's configuration. If yes, then maybe you have an issue with your wireless adapter.

If your network proves to be working with other devices and moving around the building and reloading drivers does not solve the problem, it does begin to sound like the NIC maybe bad. If it is an older laptop, it may only have an older version of wireless networking (pre n type say) and your router may not be set to operate on the older legacy types (b etc) so you can look into resetting this on the router. If you are not interested in opening the laptop and changing the board, there are small plug in USB NIC dongles that are not expensive that you can purchase and leave plugged in full time that should solve that issue if the onboard one it bad or too old for your network to work with properly.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Try plugging that laptop directly to your network (Cat5, etc) and see if you get connected. If it does not, then it is the networking set up in Windows that is the problem. If it works hard wired, this would appear to confirm it is a wireless software/driver issue.
