Do you have a wireless router? Does the laptop have wifi built in and turned on? If so you should be able click on the wireless icon(usually bottom right on taskbar) and you should be able to "see" the wireless router signal ssid (whatever you called your wifi) in your home. Double click on that connection and enter your passkey or wep key if you have set up security on the wifi (which you should). It should connect. If the laptop has no wireless built in or functioning you can buy a little USB stick you can plug in that has wifi capability, same process, once you have the little usb stick installed correctly.

With Vista, in the Network and Sharing centre make sure Network Discovery is turned on.
