Solved will a desktop computer configured as router work?

March 2, 2014 at 13:27:05
Specs: Windows XP, 2 GB Ram
I have a desktop computer with an internet provider. I also have a Dell Laptop computer that has never been hooked up to internet, I just use it for writing letters and recipes. My question is:
If I buy a "belkin N600 Dual-Band wireless-N+Router with USB Port" can I plug it into my desktop and then be able to have and use internet on my laptop computer?
thanks in advance for any help Nicki

"It says "zyxel P-600 series" is this what you wanted?"

P-600 is the series, the actual model number will be something like P-660R, P-660HW, etc. Flip it over & look for a label. Does the backside look more like # 1 or # 2?

# 1 is a DSL modem. # 2 is a combination DSL modem/router.

If it's a modem/wireless router, it will most likely have an antenna like # 3.

What type of internet service do you have? Cable? DSL? Is there a modem attached to your desktop? If there is, make sure the modem isn't already wireless capable. If it's not, a wireless router will need to be connected to the modem to be able to broadcast a wifi signal. Generally the modem will connect to the router, then the router will connect to the desktop, then the configuration of the wireless network & settings are performed thru the desktop.

Nicki, you should plug the internet into the router (it's LAN/Internet port) and then plug your PC into one of the LAN ports. Then, configure the router and the wireless network. This way all devices would be able to connect to the internet and be protected by the firewall provided inside the router.

Since you presently have the PC plugged directly into the internet, the only problem you may have with the router is it has a different MAC address than the network interface on the computer and as such, may not work immediately when you plug it in to the highspeed modem if your provider does register MAC addresses. If they do, it's not a big deal, you can spoof the MAC on the router. Which is to say, you can change the external facing network interface on the router's MAC address to the same as the network interface on your PC.

Hi riider:
I used to have dial-up internet so when I signed up for the higher speed DSL with Earthlink they sent me a modem.
It says "zyxel P-600 series" is this what you wanted?

The unit you're listing appears to be a "combination unit" Which is to say, it's a combination modem and router and wireless access point. The documentation that came with the unit should detail how to connect to it's management interface, and once there, how to configure your WLAN (wireless network). It is an older device and only G capable so if you want N, you'll still have to get a newer device.

If you do purchase another device you will want to click on my name above in this response and read my “how-to” guide titled, “Add a second Router to your LAN

The above guide details how to properly connect your new router to the other device. You will want to pay attention to "Version 1" wherein you interconnect the two routers "LAN port to LAN port"

Configuration information will be in the manual/setup guide that comes with the new device.

Hi Curt R:
You said that I have a combination unit, router and wireless access point ?
and it should tell how to configure your WLAN (wireless network)

I found the literature that came with the modem, when I set it up I got to the part that says "If you do not have a router click finish" which i clicked. so does that mean that I can go back and click onto where the Wizard asks about the router? follow his instructions and then I will have wireless access? or do I still have to buy a router?
I know everyone is trying their best to help me

Hi yourself Nicki,

From what I can see, that unit does have a built in router so how about you go through the user's guide again and this time, ignore that sentence and continue on with setting up a wireless network on it. Report back with how that goes.

Hi riider: and Curt:
it is model p-660R-D1
I went back to the wizard and had him walk me through the router, then it said "congratulations your router is now configured"
Then when I tried to get onto the internet. the modem internet light was off, and I have not been able to get onto the internet since March 4th.
Today I have spent almost one hour on the phone with internet provider "Earthlink," finally got back onto the internet, but was told that the Zyxel 600 series modem I have is NOT a router, and I can only use it on one machine. if I want Wi-Fi then I will have to get a router.
sorry about not getting back to you, but, could not get onto the internet.
