Why won't my new laptop connect to the internet?

August 11, 2017 at 15:28:46
Specs: Windows 10
All other devices can access my router with my security key, but the new laptop can't. I can connect with an ethernet wire, but not wirelessly. I have tried resetting the router, updating the network driver, setting the BIOS to default, following HP Support directions. Also, my list of possible connections includes several listings that are misspelled in addition to the correct ones. I have an HP 15 Laptop.

Tell the laptop to 'Forget' the Wifi connection. It will come back almost immediately and you can reenter the key again in case the error is locked in there somehow.
You mentioned that you reset the router, did you also restart the laptop (if not then try it).

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Restart the computer rather than turning it off then on again because on Windows 10 restart clears more.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

How do I tell the laptop to forget the WIFI connection? I have restarted the laptop several times already.

Are there any errors showing in Device Manager under Network Adaptors > WiFi?

Can you see your network and if so, what exactly happens when you try to connect to it? What error messages does it give?

Have you been to Control Panel > Troubleshooting and run the networking troubleshooters?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

On my Android phone and on iPads at work I open Wifi, tap on the connection and there is a choice to save, connect, or forget. I am hoping that Windows 10 may be similar but I do not use Wifi personally with computers as my desktop is both Windows 7 and hard wired (Windows 10 machines at work are also hard wired) so I cannot look into it right now.
Actually, look at this:

It appears to be similar.

In response to Derek, (1) I never got any errors showing in device manager. (2) I could see my networks listed three to five times with only one of these being spelled correctly. The error message would sometimes say "the security key is incorrect" and sometimes "cannot connect to network" even though I double checked to make sure I spelled it correctly. (3) Yes I used the network troubleshooter. Nothing worked. I called HP support and was told that I needed to change the router channel and set it to mixed mode. That didn't help either. I ended up returning the laptop to the store for a refund which they did with no fuss. Thanks to all for trying to help me.

OK, that's one way to sort it - thanks for letting us know. Very odd that it showed your network names spelt incorrectly, it certainly seemed screwed.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
