why is my pc blocking ports

June 10, 2011 at 13:53:33
Specs: Windows XP SP3
I have opened the ports up on my Virgin Super Hub, and everything else in my house connected to this network can access the ports which I've opened, however just on this PC, I can't seem to open them, I've tried closing my firewall, and that didn't work either.

What ports are you talking about? Do you know the difference between source ports & destination ports?

Ermmm, can't say that I do, no.. I dunno what type of ports they are, however I was told by EA support that I need them open to play a PC game they made, and I've opened them on my router as other PC's on my connection can connect properly, however this PC seems to be still blocking me from accessing them.

I'm not a gamer so I can't help you there but I can tell you that any request from the PC to any server is sent from a random port above 1024. That's the source port. If it makes a connection to the server, on the destination port, then the source port should be opened.

It could be that even though you shut windows firewall, something like Norton or Zone Alarm could be blocking it. What else is running?

Well all I had running was Avast, and I tried not only disabling it, but uninstalling it altogether, and unfortunately that didn't work either.

Exactly what ports did the tech support tell you to open?

Connect the PC directly to the modem bypassing the hub. Does it work then? Is that game played in the browser? If so, have you tried more than one browser?

There is no modem, the hub acts as both the modem and a router, and no, the game doesn't run in a browser.

Does the hub have a web interface?

Open the web interface. See if something is blocking the PC there.

I just thought of something else. Run the problem PC under the administrator account. It could be a permissions problem.

I've opened the web interface and added all the ports needed in the port forwarding section, I've also tried running it in safe mode on the Administrator account, and it still didn't work.

Why safe mode?

It's the only way I know of running on the administrator account to be honest, safe mode with networking is what I used.

Is that XP Home?

If you right click on the game icon while holding the shift key, do you see runas in the menu? If so, choose runas administrator.

I got that error for some reason.. I can run the game normally, just for some reason, not as administrator.

I'm out of ideas. Try to find a game forum. Maybe there is one for that game specifically.
