why does my computer keep connecting to bt fon and openzone

February 17, 2012 at 08:44:08
Specs: Windows Vista
Every time I switch on my computer I have to remove Bt Fon and Openzone from the wireless connections list but it persists on dropping the connection to my BT homehub and connecting to Openzone, despite the fact I have 'removed' it from the list. The Openzone signal is sometimes stronger than the Hub. I am running Windows Vista on an Acer Aspire 5920G. Beginning to wonder if it is Vista or the computer that's at fault.

Alter your wireless settings in Windows Vista so that alternative networks within range do not connect automatically.

I would also check the position of your home hub because Openzone & BT Fon connections should never be stronger than your own hub. That suggests to me that your hub is not in the ideal position to give the strongest signal. It needs to be as close as possible to your PC or laptop.

Also, for best wireless performance you need the latest home hub (version 3).

Just a possible idea. I know that BT have been heavily advertising their free hotspots with home broadband, so I wouldn't be at all surprised that if you use their installation software (which you don't actually need to do), that they have set the system to just use the strongest signal, which can often be their hotspots, especially in urban areas. So start by uninstalling any BT software - it shouldn't affect connection to your router, but if it does just go through the manual setup procedure using the security key on the homehub (newer ones have them printed on a small pull-out tab).

Thanks Pip22. I have previously changed all the settings to manual only but every time I reboot the computer I have to go through that whole procedure again - it doesn't seem to 'remember' any of the wireless settings I ask it to do and even when those wireless options are removed via the control panel, the icon at the bottom right of the homescreen shows they are still there.
I take your point about being as close as possible to the home hub, as the signal occasionally dips from full strength and that is when it picks up Openzone or Fon. I also only have version 2.0 of the HomeHub. I can feel a lengthy call coming on to BT.....deep joy.....

Thanks Johnr
I have searched the computer for any software relating to BT Home Hub 2.0 and failed to find any, or any relating to BT. But it it does make sense that something somewhere is making the computer pick up the strongest signal. Will keep searching.
