I think you have a bit to still learn :-)

laptops don't have phone numbers they have ip addresses. And the text is not like on your phone. We call it email.

Answers are only as good as the information you provide.

Rochelle, you need to give a bit more information. As Wanderer says, as a general rule you cannot text from a laptop, however, some netbooks do take SIM cards for use with 3G networks, to find the SIM number in this case the easiest way is to use your dialling software to dial a known phone number with caller display and see what number appears. Alternatively different networks have different codes for displaying the phone number - you'll need to do a Google to find the one for your provider.

Finally, if you want to text from your PC and it doesn't have a SIM there are a number of websites that you can use - do a Google search for 'text from PC' and you'll see what I mean.

Actually guys, depending on your provider, she may be able to text from her laptop without using a phone number or modem.

My cell provider has an email address I can use to text from my PC using a format as follows:

[phone number]@msg.provider.com

To find out if your cell provider has something like this setup, you'd need to call their support line.

I've noticed that smart phones cannot reply to these types of texts as they open a "chat" style window and it doesn't work. But for regular phones, they can reply.

I use this with a couple of the scripts I have monitoring important connections in my network. If the connection(s) go down, the script emails me and sends me a text so I know immediately.
