W08svr NAT internal DNS server

Hewlett-packard Microsoft windows server...
April 17, 2011 at 18:06:26
Specs: Windows 2008, 1222
Svr08 #1 is an internal AD/DNS server with one NIC, Svr08 #2 is multi-homed and is the dhcp server. I want to configure NAT on Svr08 #2, is it possible with the DNS server being on the internal LAN with only one NIC.

In the past i had the AD/DNS machine multihomed and configured with NAT, and it worked fine, clients could get internet access. This time i am trying it in a different configuration.

"is it possible with the DNS server being on the internal LAN with only one NIC."

No you need two NICs one for your public address and one for your private addresses.

Just a simple question, why not just use a component firewall to do your NATing its got to be way cheaper.

There is no issue with the dns server having one nic. Yes you can do this as diagrammed below.

internet<>server2<>switch<>server1 and pcs

Answers are only as good as the information you provide.

if the dns server is Server #1 and with a private ip address & 1 NIC, how are the clients going to find the internet? I have NAT configured on Server #2, but clients are getting no internet access.

DNS forwarders are configured on Server #1

Why not just use one NIC with two IP addresses?

Server1 has AD/DNS and is in the private lan with only one nic, while server2 has 2 NICs and has NAT configured.

Does the computer acting as a NAT router need 2 NICs, and also DNS configured?

previously i had the AD/DNS server with 2 NICs (private/public), but this time i wanted to try with the AD/DNS on the private LAN while a seperate server with 2 NICs is configured with NAT. Maybe I should have the 2 NIC pc running DNS and just have the inner LAN computer with AD only.
