I've recently come across a Nokia IP440 and notice it's designed for use in a rack. I do not have a rack. Are there any considerations I should take into account when using it? What features does the rack actually provide in real terms?

In short words, it's an additional case, where you can put in several computers (servers, monitor, keyboard, UPS aso.).

So there would be no adverse effects from using the device without a rack?

No, nothing.
See this link to understand, what a rack is made for.

The rack mountable 19 inch case you have, is just another kind of case, nothing else.
