Hello, I am looking for some advise regarding the access to an external hard drive that I have set up on my wireless network.
When I try to do an automated Windows backup (off my Vista based laptop files) on to an external hard drive which is connected to my wireless network (through a Belkin router) I am being asked for a user name and password to access the connected hard drive on the network. The thing is that I don't remember setting up a username and password for the hard drive at all.
I can paste single files mannually onto the external hard drive without being asked for a username and password.
I did perform an automated Windows backup off my other Windows 7 laptop and was not ask for a username and password.
What am I missing? I am pretty sure it is an easy solution and it drives me crazy. Can you somebody advise where to find the username and password information please?
Thank you
Have you tried entering in the password for one of the accounts on the Windows 7 computer? You've been helped by a 14 year old.
Thank you, but the challenge is that I did not set up a password or username on the widows 7 computer. When I accessed the external hard drive over the network through the windows 7 computer it did not ask me for a password or username either.
What you may need to do is take ownership of the drive on the Windows Vista computer. You need to right-click the backup folder on the drive, choose properties, click the Security tab, click Advanced, then click on the Owner tab. See if that does anything. You've been helped by a 14 year old.
