USB-printer cabled to USB on 655 OK?

D-link Xtreme n dir-655 gigabit router

Specs: Windows XP SP3, Intel core 2/4 GB
Canon S750 wired into USB connector on D-link 655 is not recognized, followed by this message: Device server not recognized.
What is my failure for this?

It is always best to read the Manual, it is not a Print Server:

"Next to these are a WAN port (there's no integrated ADSL modem) and a USB port for Wi-Fi Protected Setup. Here, the SSID and encryption keys are copied onto a USB flash drive, which you then plug into each device that needs to connect wirelessly"

My 655 USB-connector (at the backside) is configured for "shared network". The message I do get looks like this: "No USB-devices recognized. Connect to one of the USB-devices below. Printer, MFP, scanner or storagedevice." But the list is empty!
Shareport utility is installed.
To my knowledge there shall be OK to have an USB-printer on that USB port of the 655.
But I understand that something is not correct.
As allways, when you do understand what to do, it is quite easy, is it not?
