USB Modem downloads not completing.

Yes, well my girlfriend's family bought her a 3G stick. Huawei E1552.

A lot of the times when downloading something from the Internet the download will just stall. The most annoying of which are the ones that get past 90% and just die off and will not continue. Such as her Sims 2 patch. She doesn't but I do use a download manager. DownThemAll! for Mozilla Firefox. Also she uses Windows Vista I use both Vista and Ubuntu 10.10.

It's starting to get really annoying that I'll download something just to have it die on this stick. I don't seem to be losing my connect seeing as my music streams continue, IMs do too, web pages load, Skype doesn't disconnect. It's just downloads. Have the manager still nothing. Some would say it's just the host or something. But if I cancel the download it'll re-download to around about the same exact spot and then the download dies. I check it at a friend's house who has DSL. I try with the modem first and the download is dead. I get rid of it and connect to his wireless network and the download completes completely fine. Re-download it from the get go on his connection and downloads flawlessly.

For certain programs and whatnot I can just grab a torrent which it will download but at a mind bogglingly slow pace most of the time. Again on the stick downloading say a 2GB file at anytime of the day any day of the week I get an estimate of completion at around a couple of weeks. Anyone else's connection ? I'm down to download completing in like six hours. Although this isn't always the case sometimes some downloads on torrent are quick they are still slower than at my friends. And uploading is terrible too. I mean I don't just want to leech off of people but with this stick it hardly ever uploads (just torrents uploading other stuff through my web browser seems to work fine) use someone else's connection ? I'm uploading like crazy.

The worst part isn't whatever programs or other files I happen to be downloading it's when I'm trying to update the computer and it refuses to download updates. It stinks to see security updates just waiting to be downloaded for two weeks until I have a chance to borrow someone else's connection.

For the most part I've been thinking there is either something wrong with the stick or my ISP really blows or maybe that 3G connections are just the worst(well I don't think anyone could convince me otherwise on this one). Sad to say as slow as dial-up was at least uploads completed. Which reminds me I gave the impression I'm just trying to upload huge files. Whether it's GiB in size or a couple of MiB or even smaller most of them do not complete.

Any ideas or clues as to what it could be and if there is anything that could be done ?
Or if I can find a small enough download that doesn't work maybe I could get someone to re-upload it elsewhere and I could check if I don't know is it possible my ISP just blacklists most of the web ? But then why would some downloads download a few MiB before completely dying off would seem more rational to just not even begin the download, no ?

So anything to do or is my ISP just screwing me over ?

Edit: I would assume it's not the anti-virus program seeing as well 1) Linux is one of the OSs and 2) then the downloads probably wouldn't complete in other locations.

In my experience with 3G, it was actually their supplied Connection Manager Software which needed updating. Since I bought a 3G Wireless Router I have had no issues:

So basically if I want my downloads to ever complete I'll need to buy a new router ? Please say I read that wrong...I do not feel like buying a new router when I have a perfectly good one (albeit a bit aged but still good) just to get this damn thing working. Two year contract..-grumble grumble-

No what I said was that my problems were to intially to do with the Connection Manager Software, I am with Three Mobile, and they recently updated this software which allowed me greater stability of connection.

Though before they sorted their problem software, I had bought a 3G Mobile Broadband Wireless Router (they are designed so one can plug in a USB 3G Dongle) and this cured my issues.

Hmm..I remember looking into this problem a bit earlier on. And people telling about updating their firmware to fix issues. I guess I could look at the Sonera website and see if there is anything that I can update. Just wish I could read Finnish...thanks for the advice though. Always checked the manufacturer's website and not the ISP's. Well wish me luck I'm going to need it, lol.

The update to software should be provided by the ISP, in your case 02 !
