Unknown PCs visible through Internet

Specs: Windows XP
Hi

Few unknown PCs are visible if I connect my PC to Internet.

As I could see few PCs, there are chances that others could see my PC and try hacking it.

Hence, Pls advice the way in which I can make my PC invisible to others in the internet cloud and be safe.

Thanks

How are you connecting to the internet? By any chance are you accessing wirelessly on public hotspots? or are you accessing someone else's un-encrypted connection?

Thanks for your reply.

I use a wireline connection and no wireless is involved.

Still I can see few unknown PCs which are on the same subnet.

Pls share the way in which I can protect my PC either by enabling few options in windows or installing any Free software in the Internet.

Thanks

Top answer would be to engage the Windows firewall.
Turn off file and print sharing
Disable netbios over tcp/ip

Are you in an apt building with shared internet?
When you see these 'pcs' can you ping them by thier name?
