unable to stay connected in dial up

Hi there
I have this Dell laptop that I am using with an Agere usb 2.0 V92 soft modem (external modem).
My internet used to work fine for the past three months, now i am being disconnected after a few minutes, sometimes three minutes, sometimes ten minutes, sometimes one minute.
I did some windows troubleshooting, modem seems fine. I scanned for viruses, seems clean.
Since i didn't have much info on the Laptop i decided to do a clean install using the CD provided and partition my HDD to suit. That was successful.
I tried to connect again using the external modem, same problem.
I am posting this message using another laptop and the same modem after browsing for solutions for the past two hours.
I am still at home with this other LT
Why cant I stay connected with the dell and I am having no problem with this other one?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

If you go into the modem properties you should be able to check a box to enable the log. Do so and then go look at the log to see if there are clues/errors.
