What are you trying to connect to? Do you have a wireless router or accesspoint attached to a broadband modem?

"one is connected to the modem and router"

That is a completely wrong setup. You should not be connected to the modem. Doing so will steal the isp supplied ip address that the router should be getting.

Though this does not address the media disconnected state issue.

Did you configure the wireless with an encryption key?
Did you add this key to the toshiba's wireless config?

Ow my eyes! That certainly was LOUD

Disconnect the usb to pc connection from the modem.
Reboot the router.
Connect the toshiba wired to the router

Do you get on the internet with the laptop?

In lan connections disable [right mouse click] all lan connections except for the wired connection. reboot. Logon.

go to a command prompt [accessories menu]
type ipconfig /all
right mouse click the command prompt title bar and select edit then select all
then select copy.

Paste into a word or text doc then copy and paste to here for review

We are making sure wired works before moving on to wireless
