Trying to connect 3 computers using Lan

December 26, 2011 at 04:14:30
Specs: Windows XP SP2, 2.2GHz / 4gigs
Hi, I'm having trouble trying to connect 3 computers via LAN for gaming using straight Ethernet cables and a net gear router. Only 2 computers seem to connect at a time. All 3 can connect to one another (one at a time) and the I.P. addresses have been set to 192.168.0.1 , 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3. The cables work fine and the computers, but I'm wondering if I'm using the wrong kind of hub/router? That's the only explanation I can think off.
Any help would be great, thanks.

Matt

Set the computers to automatically obtain IP adresses from the router.
If you were using a switch, your settings would work.
In some instances the x.x.0.1 address is for the router.

Are you setting the IP addresses on the computers manually?

Usually Netgear routers use the 192.168.1.0 /24 network by default. Are all three computers plugged into the LAN/Switch ports on the Netgear router directly (1x, 2x, 3x, 4x)?

yeh all three are set manually using 192.168.0.1/2/3 etc.
If i plug in the computers without setting anything manually then nothing connects, it is worth just buying a ethernet switch?
