Solved trying to configure win me for wireless

October 13, 2011 at 07:05:46
Specs: Windows me, 550mhz/192mb ram
I am trying to setup wireless on an ibm IBM Think pad iSeries Type 1161-41u laptop.
I have a tp-link TL-WN321G wireless usb card.
The device shows up in the control panel under system's device manager.
I am running windows me.
When i run the software for the wireless card, it shows that it's disconnected.
The card is flashing red.
All help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Well, if the drivers are correct and the interface itself works on other units then it has to be a hardware issue with the older laptop, or possibly the software relating to the USB port.

You need to install the driver for the device in order for it to work. I would look online (if possible) for the most recent driver available. If that's not possible, the one on the disk that came with the device should get you working.

I think at this point in time you should check online for newer drivers for the device. If there are newer, apply them. If that doesn't fix the issue, I'd recommend trying a different USB Wireless interface if you either have another one you know works, or can borrow one.

Trying another known "good" USB interface will at least let you know if it's the NIC itself, or the computer that's the problem.

I have only had the device for 4 months and i know that it works because i tried it on another machine.
I think its the computer but i'm not positive.
Thank you

If the USB interface works on another computer then that most definitely means there's an issue with the laptop. Likely it's USB port(s) is toast.

If you really need to network it wirelessly, I'd look into buying a PCMCIA wireless NIC for the unit...............assuming of course you have an unused PCMCIA slot on the unit.

Hi,
I know that the usb ports work because i was able to use a wireless mouse in each of those.
I am going to look online for newer drivers.
I have 2 PCMCIA slots available. Maybe its time to go shopping :).
I didnt know that they were available wireless....hmmm thats a good idea!
The other thing is that when i put the cd in for the drivers and the utility that works with it,
i do not get a confirmation saying that the installation was complete.
After about half an hour of inactivity, i stopped the installation.
The drivers were in a folder which i installed through the device manager and the light flashes on the card but it is still not connected.

Thank you
