Tracking stolen laptop with MAC address

Specs: Windows 7
Hi everyone, my laptop has been stolen but I still have the box with all the details( Serial Number, MAC address for LAN and Wireless Product code etc) and I was wondering if there is any possibility in tracking it using for instance the physical MAC address.... I am sure that the thief reinstalled windows on drive C, as I was able to use and register my genuine copy of Win7 on a different laptop. Please help. Thanks

In short, only the police could make use of the device ID numbers to make a physical comparison if they recover a laptop matching the description of your stolen unit.

Laptops have the facility to set BIOS power-on passwords that cannot be circumvented. If you had enabled this feature then the thief would not have been able to install another operating system as you seem to have presumed.

In any event, it is gone and your prospects of locating it using the mac address of it's NIC are next to zero.

That is the reason why there are so many request on these forums from people who have "forgotten" there laptops log in password. If you did set such a password you can take some comfort that the laptop is probably useless to the thief.
