Trace/find IP from IM

June 28, 2009 at 16:43:07
Specs: Windows Vista
How could one trace the route of sent IMs from someone who sent an IM to oneself in order to find the IP address?

I understand that TRACERT and NETSTAT are two that can be used, but how exactly would one use them (step by step info, please).

Then, how could one block the IP address?

Any information on any question is helpful.

It will be almost impossible to find the IP address of a instant message. There are a few exceptions however. For example, if the instant message comes from a AOL Instant Message user who is currently has a "Direct Connection" to you (through the AOL IM program), you can use netstat -n to find that persons IP address.

If you want specific help you'll need to tell us what IM program you are using, what IM program the other person is using, and all other specifics.

Finally, what do you hope to gain by finding this persons IP address? Blocking that IP is possible, but it's not hard to get around such blocks. Tracing it to a physical location is sometimes possible, but this is rarely accurate/helpful.

Open up your computer's command prompt and run "netstat -n". Then engage in a direct connection with the person who's IP you want to know. Go back to the command prompt and run "netstat -n" again. The IP address seen the second time, but not the first, is the IP of the person you direct connected to.
