TightVNC on Ubuntu

June 2, 2010 at 14:20:24
Specs: Linux i686
Hey guys, I'm using TightVNC for ubuntu. I have configured the server and I can connect to it, but not with my ip address. I am using a router and have the 5900 port open.

I can successfully connect using the server name "craig-desktop:1" and I can authenticate and connect just fine. The server will not allow me to connect via IP.

My head feels like it's going to explode. I don't have a vlan, I'm not using NAT, please help. Brain exploding.

I can successfully connect using the server name "craig-desktop:1"

If your connect with "craig-desktop:1" to the PC, the port isn't 5900 but 5901.
That's your problem.

IF that was the case I coudln't connect at all. I'm connected through 192.168.1.100:5900. But it won't let me use my actual IP address. I'll try opening 5901 and see what happens tho.

LOL, you were right. The one thing I don't get is, why do they have me configure 5900 when 5901 is the port to use to get connections outside the network. ><

Thanks a ton! you've been a great help.

5900 is the linux port for unencrypted vnc, that comes with linux.
5901 is the TightVNC port.
If you use your_ip_address:1 it means, 1 is added to 5900.
So you get 5900 + 1 = 5901.

That's it.
