You can connect the computer to cable modem with ethernet or usb, but not both. Personally, I'd unhook the usb. It may work with both plugged in......but don't. Your phone problem I'm not sure. Did you switch from a regular telephone line to the cable service? Hooked up enough of em...just can't remember what the back panel looks like, recall it being pretty straight forward.....some here will have a better memory than me with your phone, but don't have two means of communication from pc to cable modem. Like using 2 anti-viruses...sounds good but isn't.

Its not like the old saying two heads are better than 1. I have just screwed it all up.
I removed the usb cord does that mean my usb light will stop flashing on my modem

Firstly, are you sure it's a cable modem you have? Cable does not use a standard telephone cable, it has a separate coaxial or optical cable. If your modem plugs into a standard telephone socket then you have ADSL not cable. Also with cable you shouldn't be getting any mention of dial-tone, but ADSL, especially using USB may get a dialtone message.

If it is definitely cable you have then, as HopperRox says, forget USB as it requires drivers, ethernet will work 'out of the box'. You just need the cable from your cable terminal, plugged into the back of the modem, then an ethernet cable from the modem to your PC, and a power connector to the modem, nothing else.
